Daniel Chapter 2
Daniel 2 is about King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of an image that symbolized what was to happen in the future (Dan 2: 1-3, 28-29).
This image made of gold, silver, brass, iron, and then iron mixed with clay (Dan 2: 32, 33), showing that the kingdoms through the years would each be inferior to the previous in power and glory.
The metals represent four world empires which are Babylon, Medo-persia, Greece, and Pagan Rome (Dan 2: 38- 40).
I find the last two combined metals to be the most relevant to the present day. Verse 42 of Daniel 2 states that “the kingdom shall partly strong and partly broken”, which means that part will be self-sufficient, instead of realizing their weaknesses and need of depending on Christ. This means the other half is recognizing the weakness of self, and will turn to Christ for strength and healing. This concept applies to the world today in the sense that Christianity and the rest of the world do not agree, yet they live side by side.
An interesting point about the dream is that a stone, cut without hands, smote the image on his feet, thus destroying the entire image (Dan 2: 34, 35). Since one of Jesus’ symbols is the rock or stone, this last event can be viewed as the second coming, and the great mountain it became would be symbolic of God’s kingdom, the New Jerusalem, at the end of time.
